New to hair straightening? Or just don’t have enough experience when it comes to styling your hair? Don’t worry we’re here to help! It’s super important to know what you should and shouldn’t do when it comes to straightening your hair in order to avoid hair damage, breakage or any other hair horrors.
What you should know before you start styling your hair...
Do:
Use quality hair tools.
Hair tools that are low quality don’t always use good heating plates, and don’t have unique heat settings, which can be ultra damaging to your hair. You want to make sure you get the right straightener that matches your hair type (i.e curly, thick, thin).
Use products that protect against heat damage.
There are tons of great serums out there that you can apply to your hair before you straighten your hair that protect your strands against the heat! There are also great ones that you can apply afterwards that will repair damage, and keep hair looking silky smooth.
Make sure your hair is 100% dry.
Even if your hair is a little bit damp and you use a hair iron you are increasing the damage by double! You want to make sure your hair is completely dry before straightening so that you won’t cause any hair breakage.
Understand the heat level that is right for your hair.
Most good hair straighteners allow you to choose the amount of heat you will be using. If your hair is thinner, use a lower heat; if your hair is thicker use a higher heat setting. The lower the heat setting the better for your hair, so try to monitor the lowest level of heat that will still straighten your hair.
Clean your hair Iron.
Your hair iron can get a lot of build up over time, which is then transferred over to your hair. After your straightener is off and completely cooled down, take a wipe and clean any dirt, or build-up.
Don’t:
Straighten Wet hair.
Straightening wet hair will cause your hair to sizzle, and break. You want to make sure that you never straighten your hair when wet! It’s even recommended to air dry it 50% before using a blow dryer to dry it to 100%.
Go over the same piece multiple times.
It’s smart to section your hair when straightening so that you don’t forget what pieces you’ve already straightened. Once you’ve gone over one section you should move on to the next. That way you don’t add too much heat to one piece.
Let your hair steam.
Some people straighten their hair slowly and wait till the hair strands heat up and steams. This is a big NO NO. You want to straighten each piece in a continuous motion and not for a long period of time. You want to avoid any hair steaming.
Touch the flat iron plates.
Many beginners make the mistake of touching the flat iron plates to see if it heated up enough. This is a sure way to get burnt. Instead of touching the plates, you could take a cloth to test the heat, or if you have a flat iron that displays temperature you can measure it that way.
Not wait for the iron to cool off.
Once you are finished straightening your hair, you should leave your flat iron out and unplugged to cool off completely. If you put your flat iron away when it is still hot, the heat can cause furniture heat damage, and even damage to the straighteners plates.
Hair porosity is one of the most important factors when it comes to how a hair behaves and functions. How porous your hair is can influence everything from how easily the hair can be styled to how much moisture and hydration the hair strand can retain. And yet, hair porosity remains a rather misunderstood concept, with articles few and far between.
So what exactly is hair porosity? In simple terms, hair porosity describes how tightly packed the outer cuticle layer of your hair is. The average cuticle layer is loosely packed, with small pockets allowing for moisture to pass into the hair strand to be absorbed by the inner layers. However, some hair types have extremely tight cuticle layers, which prevents moisture from getting into the hair strand. As a result, low-porosity hair is not only extremely susceptible to dryness and dehydration, but it can also become greasy and oily when one tries to moisturize the dry hair, as the oil pools at the surface as opposed to absorbing.
Thankfully, there are a handful of oils that are perfect for low-porosity hair. If you have low-porosity hair, keep these oils on hand to keep your hair looking sleek and moisturized!
Jojoba Oil
If you have low-porosity hair, you’re probably far too familiar with oils that pool up on the cuticle and scalp, leaving you a greasy, messy mess. Jojoba oil, on the other hand, is considered the closest oil to our natural hair sebum, which makes it a lightweight, deeply penetrative oil that keeps the hair as hydrated as naturally as possible.
Argan Oil
One of the richest oils available, argan oil is so effective at keeping the hair moisturized and hydrated that it creates a protective coating around the hair strand, allowing the hair to remain moist and sleek until it has been washed off. Add some argan oil in winter for an extremely protective treatment to prevent excessive dryness.
Sweet Almond Oil
For an oil that is easily absorbed by the hair strand and can easily penetrate the tight cuticle layer, you can’t do much better than sweet almond oil! This oil’s low molecular weight allows it to penetrate tighter cuticle layers much more effectively than other oils. As a result, this oil can intensely moisturize even the least porous of hair types.
Baobab Oil
Taken from the baobab tree, this oil is incredibly rich and intensely moisturizing, allowing it to provide a massive boost of hydration to even the driest of hair types. Even better, this oil is chock-full of fatty acids and vitamins, allowing it to enhance the hair health, prevent breakage, and promote shine and softness.
Who hasn’t seen a movie or tv show where a character takes a tropical vacation to some humid climate and her hair explodes into a frizzy, weightless mess? For many of us, this comedic scene is all too real, with many of us suffering the effects of “humidity hair” when encountering a humid climate. While taking in the warm, tropical views of our travel destination, you may be shocked and a bit taken aback to notice your hair no longer looks like, well, your hair! With your normally flat, straight hair becoming more textured and dry or your curly, wavy hair becoming a massive beehive, it can be totally frustrating to try and deal with hair that no longer looks and behaves as usual.
Thankfully, we’re here to bring clarity to this confusing condition as well as give you an action plan to prevent and treat humidity hair!
Understanding The Hair’s Hydrogen Bonds
In order to understand why humidity has such a profound effect on hair, it’s important to first understand the physical and chemical makeup of the hair strand itself. You see, hair is made up of the protein known as keratin, which also makes up our skin and nails. These keratin protein molecules are bonded together by two types of bonds: disulfide bonds and hydrogen bonds. Disulfide bonds are permanent and extremely difficult to break without intense chemical and/or physical treatments. However, hydrogen bonds are much weaker and more temporary in structure, breaking down every time they make contact with water and then rebuilding once the hair dries. This is why dry hair seems to be stuck in place when it comes to shape and texture, but after wetting it with water it is easier to style and reorganize, as you are resetting the hydrogen bonds of the hair and allowing the bonds to be rebuilt and fixed with the hair in a new shape and position.
Humidity and Hydrogen Bonds
Now that you understand the process by which hydrogen bonds break and rebuild themselves, you have a better understanding of how humid, water-rich air interacts with these same hydrogen bonds. When air is more humid, there are more water molecules floating in the air, and these molecules make contact with the hydrogen bonds in the hair, causing them to break. When these bonds break, the shape and structure that you set your hair when styling becomes reset, so to speak, causing the hair to be loose and unmanageable. Additionally, wet hair absorbs moisture like a sponge, causing it to swell and expand, making your hair look “bigger”.
Treating and Preventing Humidity Hair
With an understanding of how humidity hair works, you are on your way to preventing and treating this annoying occurrence! Here’s some key steps to keeping things under control when encountering a humid environment:
Make sure your hair is completely dry when you step out into the open air, as still-damp hair will unravel far quicker than dry hair.
Before entering the humid environment, make sure to seal the cuticle with an oil-rich serum or hair oil blend that prevents the cuticle from opening and allowing for swelling and hydrogen bond breakage.
If all else fails, wear your hair in an updo or ponytail style for complete peace of mind, keeping it tied back and restrained to prevent the constant worry of untamable frizz!
It’s no secret that one of the biggest keys to achieving healthy, beautiful hair is keeping your hair hydrated and moisturized. When hair is dry and dehydrated, it lacks the structural integrity needed to hold shape and create the kind of full, bodacious hairstyles we crave. Additionally, when hair is dry, it begins to lift its outer cuticle layer to absorb more moisture, leading to hair that feels rough and bumpy to the touch while looking dull and lifeless due to losing its natural sheen and shine.
While many of us automatically correlate moisturized hair with thick, oily products like a hair oil or a leave-in conditioner with heavy butters and waxes, one underrated class of hair hydrators is the humectants. While oils and butters work as emollients by sealing the cuticle layer to hold in moisture while filling in the bumps and cracks of the cuticle layer, humectants work by penetrating the hair shaft and drawing moisture into the hair strand and causing it to swell. One of the most popular ingredients in this category is glycerin, which is an extremely effective and cheap ingredient for attracting water and moisture into the hair and skin. However, glycerin can be quite sticky and have a negative skin feel, and many hair types react negatively to glycerin in humid climates. Thankfully, a trendy skincare ingredient used for attracting moisture is also quite effective when used in hair, all without the sticky feeling and negative reaction of glycerin. Say hello to hyaluronic acid!
What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic acid is known as a natural moisturizing factor (NMF), meaning it is a naturally moisturizing ingredient found within our skin. This sugar molecule is extremely important in maintaining the health and hydration of our skin, from ensuring water is attracted to the epidermis along with keeping it looking supple and smooth. The secret to hyaluronic acid is in how incredibly efficient it is at attracting water, with studies showing that this magic ingredient can absorb up to 1000 times its own weight in water! Much like a sponge, hyaluronic acid pulls a massive amount of moisture from the environment and draws it into your skin, causing it to swell and look supple.
Hyaluronic Acid and Your Hair
So we know how effective hyaluronic acid is for your skin, but what about your hair? Much like with your skin, hyaluronic acid, when applied to the hair, can pull water from the air and draw it into the hair strand, causing it to plump and swell. The result is hair that looks thicker and fuller, allowing for more body and volume. Additionally, hyaluronic acid typically has a high molecular weight, meaning that rather than penetrate the hair strand, the acid molecules coat the outer cuticle layer, allowing water to pass through while sealing the outside and keeping the cuticle smooth.
To use hyaluronic acid on your hair, you can use the same hyaluronic acid product that you use on your skin, applying it to damp hair after shampooing and working it from roots to tips. The result? Hydrated, moisturized hair that looks fuller and healthier!
When it comes to our hair, we all want to keep it the healthiest it could be! So we decided to do some research and compile a list of the top 5 things that you should be doing to keep your hair healthy. By doing these 5 simple hacks you’ll see changes in your hair, for the better! So what are the top 5 hair hacks?
1. Don’t wash your hair everyday.
By not washing your hair everyday you give your natural hair oils the chance to take over! Constant cleansing can lead to drier hair, which makes it more prone to breakage and split ends. The best advice is to keep your hair-washing down to (at most) every other day, this way you don’t dry out your scalp or your hair!
2. Avoid using conditioner on your scalp.
When you do wash your hair try to use conditioner only on the ends of your hair rather than the roots. Putting conditioner on your scalp or roots can actually clog your pores, which both slows hair growth and increases unnatural oil production. The excess oil will make your roots oily, and also trigger the stop of natural oil production. So do the best you can to avoid using conditioner on your scalp.
3. Use natural oils like coconut or olive oil to prevent breakage.
If your hair is feeling more dry than usual, which could be the effect of over-washing or over-processed coloring, then using natural oils is almost life changing! There are many remedies to applying natural oils—So let’s break down our two favorites. You can use these natural oils as a hair mask pre-shower; apply from the scalp down, leave in for about a half hour and then follow up with your usual shampoo routine (it’s recommended to do this about once a week, but this depends on how dry your hair is). The second method is to apply the natural oil to the ends of your hair post-shower. Brush it into your ends, and let dry. Coconut oil, and olive oil are both natural ways to add moisture and shine that will make your hair feel immediately silkier and smoother!
4. Brush your hair from the bottom up.
When brushing your hair you should always start from the bottom! Starting from the top can cause a serious amount of knots and breakage. You want to avoid roughly pulling on your hair, especially from the roots since this can cause hair loss. Start from the bottom and slowly work through your knots till you reach your scalp this makes sure you don’t cause excess breakage, and keeps your hair full!
5. Get hair cuts more often.
And it doesn’t even have to be a full cut! You should be getting consistent trims to get rid of dead and split ends, as well as to prevent any breakage. By trimming your hair more often you will promote hair growth, health, and strength! Avoiding hair cuts can cause your hair to be dull, dry, and more prone to breakage. So put life back into your hair and get your hair cut more often.
One final tip! Use quality hair tools.
It’s important when styling your hair to use high quality tools that won’t totally fry your hair. For example, change out your average hair dryer or flat iron with one that uses infrared technology, and quality ceramic plates! Styling your hair doesn’t have to be damaging and you want to be sure you’re using products that promote healthy hair.
Also always get to know your hair. If it’s feeling more dry than usual, then know it's the right time to apply hair oil or mask. If it's feeling more oily than usual then cut down on hair washing, and stop applying conditioner to your roots. If you’re seeing more split ends than usual, know it's time for a haircut!
