How to Get Rid of Split Ends 101

How to Get Rid of Split Ends 101

What are split ends and why do we get them? Split ends are when your hair splits at the bottom and fray all the way up your hair strand. Split ends are the result of many factors, but they most commonly come from heat damage, overexposure to sun, and use of hair accessories. Some of these things are a part of our everyday hair routine so instead of getting rid of them all together there are some tips and tricks to treating these dry damaged split ends.

1. Get Extra Moisturizing Shampoo & Conditioner

The more you use quality hair products that promote moisture in your hair, the less your hair will be dry and prone to breakage and split ends. Using shampoos and conditioners that are meant for over processed, colored and damaged hair are meant to help put healthy ingredients back into your hair strands. So next time you re-up on your shampoo and conditioner try to look for the products that are labeled for dry and damaged hair.

2. Air Dry Your Hair Before Your Style It

Before you decide to style or blow-dry, let your hair air dry at least 50% so that you don’t overheat your hair and cause heat damage. By doing this, you avoid your hair from becoming dry and brittle which will minimize split ends!

3. Use natural oils to prevent breakage

If your hair is feeling more dry than usual, using natural oils can be life changing! Apply natural oils, such as jojoba or coconut, to the ends of your hair post-shower. Brush it into your ends, and let dry.

4. Brush your hair from the bottom up

When brushing your hair you should always start from the bottom  and slowly work through your knots till you reach your scalp. Starting from the top can cause more friction, which causes split ends and breakage. You want to avoid roughly pulling on your hair. T his makes sure you don’t cause excess breakage, and keeps your hair feeling healthier.

5. Trim Your Hair Regularly

In order to avoid damage to your hair, you should be getting consistent trims. This will remove dead and split ends, as well as to prevent excessive breakage. By trimming your hair more often you will promote hair growth, health, and strength! Avoiding hair cuts can cause your hair to be dull, dry, and more prone to breakage.

6. Use Heat Protecting Products

Before blow-drying or hair styling, apply a heat protecting spray to your hair. Since overheating your hair is a main cause of split ends, this will protect your hair from burning and drying out.

7. Sleep on a silk pillowcase.

Normal pillowcases cause a lot of friction and breakage to your hair. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase reduces this friction, meaning less breakage and split ends!

8. Wear a Hat to Protect your Strands from the Sun!

Most people don’t know this but the UV rays from the sun can cause some serious damage. Just like heat from a blow dryer, heat from the sun is also known to dry out your hair and make your ends break and split. So wear a hat to protect your strands!

9. Take More Care With Wet Hair

Wet hair is much more fragile and prone to breakage. So when your hair is wet take extra precautions like not putting it in an up-do, or over-brushing. It's even recommended to not brush your hair at all when wet!

10. Don’t use your Hair Tools on Highest Heat Setting

Hair tools these days can get to extreme heat, which can be fine on certain parts of our hair, but it can also fry our strands which we want to avoid! If you can get the same hair style at a lower heat it’s preferred so that you avoid the long term damage and split ends.

Try out these tips and see how much better your hair will look and feel! The journey to minimizing split ends is continuous, but in the end it’s worth it!
